Herndon has got more going on than people assume. Farm animals, a bike trail, maybe a show if the kids haven’t melted down by dinner. What you actually end up doing depends on your kids, the forecast, and how much patience is left by 2pm. You could grab one outdoor idea, keep one indoor backup in your pocket for when the weather does its thing, and just go.
1. Frying Pan Farm Park
Few things to do in Herndon VA feel as wholesome as a morning here, and we mean that. Kids get right up close to cows, goats, chickens, the whole setup, and the old farmhouse makes it feel like a real trip back in time, not some staged photo-op version of one.
Spring is the best time to go. Quick heads-up though: the old carousel is gone for good, damaged beyond repair in that January 2026 winter storm, so don’t build your whole trip around riding it like folks used to. Wagon rides are still running seasonally for a small fee. Walking around the farm itself? Still free.
- Wagon rides cost extra
- Wear shoes you don’t mind getting dusty, this is a farm after all
2. The W&OD and Sugarland Run Trails
Got bikes? Throw them in the trunk, seriously.
The W&OD Trail runs right through Herndon and it is flat. This matters a lot more than people think when you have got a kid on training wheels who has one bump away from a meltdown. Start near downtown, ride until the youngest one taps out, turn around. That’s the whole plan, no route-mapping required.
Sugarland Run is the quieter option if the W&OD feels too busy on a weekend, tree-lined, runs alongside a creek. Go early if it’s hot out. Trust us on that one.
3. Herndon Community Center
When rain or heat makes you question your life choices, either way, this place has you covered. Indoor pool, so swimming doesn’t hinge on the forecast, which is a lifesaver during school breaks when the kids are bouncing off the walls by mid-morning.
Just call ahead about pool hours. They shift around more than you would expect and nobody wants to drive over for a locked door.
4. Runnymede Park
Not every kid wants to pedal around, some would rather crouch by a pond looking for frogs, and that’s exactly what Runnymede is for. It is 58 acres, paved accessible trail, picnic spots, enough plants and wildlife to keep a curious kid occupied way longer than you’d expect.
It is quieter than most spots on this list. That’s kind of the whole point, actually. Consider it one of those unique things to do in Herndon VA nobody really talks about until someone local mentions it.
5. Downtown Herndon
Nothing fancy needed here, and that’s a feature, not a bug. Start at the old Herndon Depot, wander a block or two, grab a snack somewhere, let an hour stretch into two without even trying.
The depot connects to the town’s railroad history, so it doubles as a lazy history lesson without dragging anyone into an actual museum they will complain about. Go earlier if you can, event weekends get crowded fast.
6. NextStop Theatre
Got a kid who tunes out screens but perks up for a good story? Check what’s playing at NextStop. It is Herndon’s own theatre, and outside the regular season they run stuff aimed right at younger audiences, including family-friendly improv nights.
One thing though, not every show is built for kids. Check the lineup first. Nobody wants an awkward mid-show exit.
7. Worldgate Centre
Bad weather, and nobody in the family can agree on a plan? This is your fallback, no shame in it. Movie, food, some shops to poke around in, all without driving between three separate places.
Works best when everyone wants something a little different, honestly, since there’s just enough packed into one spot to cover most people’s preferences at once.
8. Festivals on the Town Green
The Town Green stays busy basically all year, Herndon Festival, NatureFest, the town’s own Jazz Festival, real events with real crowds. Kids get room to just run around, and you get to actually finish a sentence with another adult for once, which doesn’t happen enough.
Check the calendar before heading over. Bigger festivals mean parking gets rough.
9. The Rooms at Escape Room LoCo
Alright, full disclosure, we are a little biased on this one. Escape Room LoCo is a short drive out in Leesburg, and everything in the rooms lineup is built by hand locally, not some franchise thing shipped in from a warehouse.
But the drive isn’t really why we are mentioning it. The rooms has four indoor rooms, Dreams Factory, Refuge, Totally 90s Mall Escape, Alien Agents, plus outdoor scavenger-hunt style adventures like Operation Mindfall that most escape rooms around here just don’t do. And no, you don’t need experience going in, which matters if this is a family’s first time.
Younger kids usually gravitate toward Dreams Factory. It is playful, not scary. Teenagers tend to want something harder, Alien Agents usually does the trick. Take a look at the current lineup before booking so you actually pick the right one, and don’t be shocked if you’re back within the month.
Rainy day? The Community Center pool or Worldgate both work fine when the forecast falls apart. Planning around teens instead of little kids? Skip the toddler stuff, lean into the trail, festival season, or a tougher escape room like Alien Agents.
That’s really the whole idea behind things to do in Herndon VA with kids, you don’t need to hit all nine in one weekend. Nobody does that. Pick two that fit your family’s mood and let the rest sit for another Saturday.
So what sounds better this weekend, animals, pedals, or a locked door?
